UTILITIES IN COSTA RICA

Most basic utilities in Costa Rica are government owned.

Electricity.  In most of the country the service is provided by CNFL the national electric company.  In rural areas you may find Electrical cooperatives that provide the service.

The current electrical rates for CNFL are as follows:

As an example.  A 2,500 Sq.ft home in the central valley (no a/c) will pay between $80 to $95 per month in electricity

Telephone.  The telephone service is also government operated by way of ICE (Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad).  The basic monthly residential rate is $6 per month.  For cell phones the basic rates begins at $7 per month.

Residency Renewal Procedures Update for 2010

For some time now the Costa Rican Department of Immigration has allowed the renewal of an immigration residency card by using the branch services of Banco de Costa Rica.   To do so the applicant simply calls the Banco de Costa Rica 900 number  (900-00-34639) to set the appointment date.  Those that set up the renewal appointment should also be aware that the Department of Immigration is requiring the following documents at the renewal appointment.
