How to Register with The United States Embassy in Costa Rica for Residency Processing In Costa Rica

Any person that is applying for residency in Costa Rica must register with their local Embassy in Costa Rica and provide proof of registration to the Costa Rica Department of Immigration along with their application.

If you are a citizen of the United States you must register with the US Embassy in San Jose, Costa Rica. This is done by registering online and then making an appointment with the Notary Office of the US Embassy. According to their website http://costarica.usembassy.gov/living.html registration involves the steps set forth below:

“1) Complete the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program process online. Please print your confirmation page.

2) Make an appointment for a notarial service online and bring in the STEP confirmation page to the U.S. Embassy.

3) During the notarial appointment ($50 fee), you will be given another form to complete that you will present to Costa Rican authorities that certifies you have registered with the U.S. Embassy”

Once you have the certification of registration issued by the Notary section of the US Embassy you can deliver that document to the Attorney or agent that is processing your immigration application so that it can be incorporated into you Costa Rica residency application file.
