How do I purchase automobile insurance in Costa Rica?

Every motor vehicle owner is obligated by law to maintain the minimum no-fault coverage.  This policy is purchased through the government insurer (Instituto Nacional de Seguros) on an annual basis.  It is called a Marchamo.  This minimum coverage and premium amount is set by the National Insurance Institute.  

The National Insurance Institute also sells a number of supplemental insurance policies covering a number of other risks, such as property damage, collision, theft, and increased coverage for liability for death or injury, with premiums varying according to the coverage sought.

There are other private insurers in Costa Rica that also provide automobile liability policies.
