Can an Expatriate buy Real Estate in Costa Rica?

Buying real estate in Costa Rica as a foreigner is permitted (with certain restrictions).   Prior to completing any real estate transactions, a buyer would be well advised to retain the services of a qualified and reputable Attorney – specializing in real estate conveyance. Particular issues may arise in the ascertaining of the state of the title to property, which are different from other jurisdictions.

Also, a number of general legal statutes may have a bearing on the development of a piece of property, such as the Maritime Zoning Law, which may not be annotated on the title to the property, as registered in the National Property Registry.

For these and other considerations – which may not be apparent to an unsuspecting buyer – retaining proper professional advisers is imperative.
