Costa Rica Electric Rates Increase Substantially

The Costa Rican electric company Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad has increased the electrical rates by 30% in 2013.  This increase has generate protests by many of the manufacturing facilities located in Costa Rica who point out that the increase in rates puts Costa Rica at a competitive disadvantage with other countries.

Even service providers are complaining that the increases have made them exceed their electrical budgets for 2013.

At 17.6 cents per Kw / hour it is the most expensive in the region.

The government has indicated that it will look into these disproportiante price increases.   The graph below published in the local newspaper La Nacion shows a comparison of rates in the region.
