The Consumer Protection Law of Costa Rica

The Consumer Protection Law of Costa Rica, Law No. 7472 protects the consumer in Costa Rica.  The Consumer Protection Law has accompanying regulations.  The Regulations to the law set out the actual procedures for implementing and applying the Consumer Protection Law of Costa Rica.

What does the Consumer Protection Law of Costa Rica do ?

The aim of this law is to protect the rights and legitimate interests of the consumers.  The law protects and promotes the process of free competition.  It does so  by preventing, monopolies , monopolistic practices and other restrictions on the operation of an efficient free market.  The law also attempts to eliminate   unnecessary regulations that would hinder economic activities.

Who is in charge of Consumer Protection ?

The governmental agency that is in charge of overseeing consumer protection in Costa Rica is the Ministry of Economy and Commerce (MEIC).  This government office is located in the capital city of San Jose.
