How do I purchase automobile insurance in Costa Rica?
All insurance in Costa Rica is purchased from the National Insurance Institute (I.N.S.), a government corporation. Every motor vehicle owner is obligated by law to maintain the minimum no-fault coverage, which is payable annually with the vehicle registration fees (Marchamo). This minimum coverage and premium amount is set by the National Insurance Institute.
The National Insurance Institute also sells a number of supplemental insurance policies covering a number of other risks, such as property damage, collision, theft, and increased coverage for liability for death or injury, with premiums varying according to the coverage sought.
